For 43 years, North Mecklenburg has had one holiday parade, and both towns shared it. Last December it stepped off at 1 p.m. and ran about two miles down Main Street and Highway 115, from Davidson to the corner of North Main Street and Catawba Avenue in Cornelius.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, there will be two parades. The Cornelius Christmas Parade steps off at 10 a.m. in Old Town. The 44th North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade follows at 1 p.m. on a shortened route through downtown Davidson. The cause is a construction zone on the old route. Neither town canceled. Each kept its own piece, and a Cornelius household now gets a full Saturday of holiday events where it used to get one afternoon.
The Roundabout Sitting on the Old Route
The work on the old route is NCDOT's roundabout at NC 115 and Potts Street in Cornelius. It replaces the old T-intersection, and the intersection moves west of where it used to be, so parts of both NC 115 and Potts Street are being realigned. It belongs to a $15 million contract awarded in late 2023 to Caton Construction. The same contract covers a companion project in Davidson that links Potts, Sloan and Beatty streets into a route running parallel to NC 115.
Anyone who drives Main Street has felt it all year. On March 13, crews closed NC 115/Main Street and moved traffic onto Potts Street for the tie-ins, waterline, paving and drainage work. On Aug. 3, NCDOT put temporary three-way stops at Potts Street and Catawba Avenue and at South Main Street and Catawba Avenue. In its traffic update, the Town of Davidson said the extra traffic came from the Cornelius roundabout project.
The finish date has moved. A Cornelius project timeline prepared in June 2026 listed construction ending Aug. 1, 2026. The town's project page says fall 2026. NCDOT's March release says late 2026, with landscaping and plantings continuing through spring 2027. With the route still under construction as December approached, both towns planned around it. We covered a similar story on the other side of town in our look at the West Catawba widening. Road projects set the local calendar more than their posted dates suggest.
How One Parade Became Two
The two parades are shorter versions of the old one, and each town kept the half it controls.
Cornelius. As Cornelius Today reported on Oct. 28, Old Town Cornelius Inc. worked with the town to set up the Cornelius Christmas Parade. It leaves Mount Zion Church at 10 a.m., heads north on Highway 115 and ends near Pecan Street in Old Town. Festivities run at Cornelius Town Hall from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with live music, local vendors, food trucks, family activities and photos with Santa.
Davidson. The Town of Davidson's route update keeps the 44th North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade at its usual 1 p.m. start. The route is about one mile, half of last year's two. It starts at Main and Griffith streets, follows Main Street to South Street, turns up South Street and ends near McEver Fields and Davidson Elementary School. Afterward, the Merry Main Street Tricycle Race runs on Main Street in front of the Town Green, with four-person tricycle teams sponsored by local Davidson businesses.
Neither route ends at North Main and Catawba this year, where the shared parade used to finish.
Saturday, Dec. 5, Hour by Hour
The 10 a.m. start in Cornelius matters most. It puts the Old Town parade a full three hours ahead of Davidson's, and that leaves room for both, with lunch in between.
| Time | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 10 a.m. | Cornelius Christmas Parade steps off | Mount Zion Church, north on Hwy 115 to near Pecan Street |
| About 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Parade-day festivities, Santa photos | Cornelius Town Hall |
| 1 p.m. | 44th North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade | Main and Griffith streets to South Street, Davidson |
| After the parade | Merry Main Street Tricycle Race | Main Street at the Davidson Town Green |
| 6 to 9 p.m. | Christmas in Davidson, final night | Downtown Davidson |
| 7:30 p.m. | White Christmas | Cain Center for the Arts, Cornelius |
Christmas in Davidson runs Thursday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. The town's announcement says opening ceremonies start Thursday at 6 p.m., with Santa's arrival and the annual tree lighting on the Town Green. The town hasn't published the full 2026 lineup for each night yet. When it ran last year, Main Street was closed to traffic from Concord Road to Jackson Street during the event. That's worth knowing if you plan to drive into downtown Davidson Saturday evening.
Back in Cornelius, the Cain Center's events listing shows White Christmas at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, plus 3 p.m. matinees on Dec. 6 and 13. If you'd rather spend Saturday night at the theater than on Main Street in Davidson, that's the option. Check cainarts.org for current times and tickets before you plan around a show.
No official road closures, parking plans or viewing areas have been posted yet for either parade. The Old Town Cornelius parade page and the Town of Davidson's news page are where those details are most likely to show up.
Both Parades Are Capped at 50 Entries
The shorter routes also mean fewer floats. Cornelius caps its parade at 50 entries. Entry is free for businesses, nonprofits, schools, churches, neighborhood groups and other community organizations, and registration closes Nov. 20 at oldtowncornelius.org/christmas-parade.
Davidson also caps its parade at 50 entries this year because of the alternate route. Vehicle entries are limited to two axles, and any trailer must be within the vehicle's rated towing capacity, carry current registration and meet safety requirements.
Your HOA, church or youth team may have marched in the shared parade before. This year it has to choose which town to march in, and it has to register before the spots run out. In Cornelius, that deadline is Nov. 20.
A Week Earlier, the Tree Goes Up on Catawba
Parade weekend isn't the start of the Cornelius holiday season. The town calendar lists the 15th annual Light Up Cornelius for Saturday, Nov. 28, starting at 4 p.m. Visit Lake Norman lists it from 4 to 7 p.m. in Downtown Cornelius at 21445 Catawba Ave. The listing includes performances, children's activities, a sledding hill, train rides, food and drink, s'mores, and Santa and Mrs. Claus. It's free, according to the Lake Norman visitors guide listing.
So Cornelius hosts back-to-back Saturdays downtown, with the tree lighting on Nov. 28 and the parade on Dec. 5. Old Town now has more places to fill the time around them than it did a year ago.
Where to Eat Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The three hours between parades fall over breakfast and lunch, and several of the closest options opened this year. For the longer story of how Cornelius restaurants moved into existing buildings, see our look at the town's rewritten restaurant map.
- Starlight Bakery and Jaleedy's Dairy Bar are among the new storefronts on Catawba Avenue listed in Cornelius Today's September downtown roundup, along with Pure Olive and Old Town Vinyl.
- Hunter's Bagels opened in October on West Catawba Avenue, near Goodwill, in the space that used to be Coffee Republic & Bakery, Cornelius Today reported.
- Little Mama's Italian opened its third location Sept. 7 at 9623 Bailey Road, Suite 100. Cornelius Today reported Saturday hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- The Alleyway, a 75-seat cocktail lounge from the owners of Harp & Crown, opened next door to Harp & Crown on West Catawba, according to Cornelius Today. At opening, it kept 5 p.m. to midnight hours Tuesday through Saturday. That makes it an evening stop if you skip the drive to Davidson.
From there it's a short drive north to downtown Davidson for the 1 p.m. parade. Potts Street has carried detoured traffic for much of the year, so leave early. If you want lunch closer to Davidson, the rebuilt Sadler Square on Griffith Street has counter-service food near where the Davidson parade starts.
2027 Brings Back a Single Parade
Organizers said, according to Cornelius Today, that they don't plan to repeat the Cornelius Christmas Parade. They expect the North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade to return in 2027 on its traditional route along Highway 115 from Davidson into Cornelius. NCDOT's late-2026 completion estimate fits that plan, though the roundabout's finish date has already moved once this year. So Dec. 5 is likely the only time an Old Town parade goes up Highway 115 at 10 a.m. and ends near Pecan Street, with Davidson's parade on the same day.
The holidays are one of the best times to see how Cornelius and Davidson actually work side by side, from the roads they share to the traditions they've learned to split.
